Company Officer Assessment Center

More than a firefighter’s original recruitment, the Officer Promotional Process is as varied as the department and town you work in, and the Fire Chief and Assessment Committee that runs it. It’s also far more involved than basic recruiting and can run from 4 hours to 3 days long.

The most common areas that a candidate is assessed on are:

  • Emergency scene/operational/tactical simulations

  • Command and command mindset as well as Leadership and character

  • Personnel scenarios such as Progressive Discipline, Employee Counseling, and understanding the Firefighter Bill of Rights

  • Writing exercises such as new equipment purchase requests, training reports and recruitment/retention assessments

  • Oral presentations

  • Additionals may include a target hazard in your district, reading smoke, or an assessment of the dept’s CISM program

This is obviously a broad subject matter area to excel at. With that in mind, and to help you shine throughout the process, Chief Robertson harnesses his solid and varied fire service experience in working very closely with you to determine:

  • What comprises your particular department’s Officer Promotion Assessment Center.

  • What areas of your own professional development would need to be addressed.

  • Determine what really drives you to want to promote, and what career goals do you want to achieve to satisfy that “inner fire”.

  • What action plan is going to work best for you to be successful.
